Obliterate Phobias

From the greek word Phobos, meaning fear, Phobias are an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things or people. If you suffer from phobias you will know that the main symptom is an obsessive desire to avoid the feared subject or situation, but if avoidance isn’t possible the next stage of symptoms can become extremely distressing.

You may experience any of the hundreds of common phobias, or a rare personal phobia that is unique to you and your life experiences, but it is likely that your fear will fit into one of these 3 categories:

  • Social
  • Spatial
  • Specific

Social phobias

Do you fear embarrassment and negative evaluations from peers in social situations? This is the basis of most social fears including:

  • Fear of public speaking
  • Fear of eating in public
  • Fear of self expression
  • Fear of leaving the house (Agoraphobia)
  • Fear of crowds or large groups
  • Fear of general social situations

You may feel that these phobias are physical, especially if your reaction includes anxiety based symptoms like increased heart rate, breathing difficulties or panic attacks, but the mind is a powerful thing which can create physical reactions to our thoughts, beliefs and feelings.

Spatial phobias

Claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) is always one of the top 10 phobias in any survey or study, as is Agoraphobia (fear of leaving your home) and they involve a fear of the particular area or amount of space available. Spatial phobias can include a fear of closed in spaces, a fear of open spaces and a fear of heights.

You are not alone if you suffer from any of these phobias, whether you are just slightly afraid of small spaces or spiral into a complete meltdown when you have to leave your home. Phobias come in a variety of levels of severity so if your phobia is starting to negatively affect your lifestyle, it is time to seek help and overcome these fears once and for all.

Specific phobias

A specific phobia isn’t related to social situations or spatial issues, it involves being fearful of a particular situation or thing and generally includes everything not covered in the previous 2 categories. Examples of these are Arachnophobia (spiders), Aerophobia (flying), Emetophobia (vomit), Astraphobia (storms), Necrophobia (death) and Mysophobia (germs) to name just a few.
