Dental fears, phobias and anxieties

Does the thought of visiting the Dentist fill you with fear and dread?  You are not alone.

A friend of mine in her late 50’s recently summed up her experience of the Dentist.

“When I was in my early 20’s I went to the dentist where they performed a crown, pulled out a tooth and gave me injections. I was so terrified that I have NEVER been back since and will NEVER go back again!”

Now this is a lady I know has 2 grown up children runs a very successful business in Melbourne and is a very nice person!

If the thought of the dentist scares you our Hypnodental session is what you need.

The difference between anxiety, fear and phobia

A distinction has been made between dental anxiety, dental fear, and dental phobia.

  • DENTAL ANXIETY is a reaction to an UNKNOWN danger. Anxiety is extremely common, and most people experience some degree of dental anxiety especially if they’re about to have something done which they’ve never experienced before. Basically, it’s a fear of the unknown.
  • DENTAL FEAR is a reaction to a known danger (“I know what the dentist is going to do, been there, done that – I’m scared!!”), which involves a fight-or-flight response when confronted with the threatening stimulus.
  • DENTAL PHOBIA is essentially the same as fear, only much stronger (“I know what happens when I go to the dentist – there’s no way I’m going back if I can help it. I’m so terrified I feel sick”). The fight-or-flight response occurs when just thinking about or being reminded of the threatening situation. Someone with a dental phobia will avoid dental care at all costs until either a physical problem or the psychological burden of the phobia becomes overwhelming.

There are other classification schemes; for example, Weiner and Sheehan (1990) distinguish two types of dental anxiety: exogenous (from the outside) and endogenous (from the inside). Exogenous dental anxiety is defined as anxiety due to traumatic dental experiences. Endogenous dental anxiety is thought to have originated from other anxiety disorders.

Similarly, the University of Washington Categories of Dental Fear distinguishes between 4 categories of dental fear:

  • Fear of Specific Stimuli
  • Distrust of Dental Personnel
  • Generalized Anxiety
  • Fear of Catastrophe (fear of a medical emergency)

The first two of these would usually have been caused by previous bad experiences (“exogenous”), whereas generalised anxiety and fear of catastrophe could be classed as endogenous. These distinctions aren’t always helpful, though. For example, someone may have experienced a real medical emergency in the past during dental treatment (exceedingly rare, but not impossible, e. g. in the case of a genuine severe allergic reaction). In this case, the fear of catastrophe would be due to a previous bad experience. Also, when someone is asked what they fear about the dentist and their answer is “everything”, dentists may assume that this is a sign of generalised anxiety, even though the person may not be particularly anxious in everyday life.

Of course, people may fall into more than one category. Exogenous dental anxiety may be perceived as being more “irrational” than fears caused by bad dental experiences. But in my experience, once we know a person’s history and the causes of their anxiety, there is usually a very rational explanation behind it (although where childhood trauma is concerned, people may not remember the events that led up to their anxiety).

It is always safest to assume that “irrational” fears are not irrational at all, but caused by very real events.

Teenagers: Depression and anxiety

Adolescence is a time of change and it can be hard to tell the difference between ‘normal teenage behaviour and depression and anxiety. In Australia, 160,000 young people (16-24 years) live with depression and around one in six young people have anxiety according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health and Well Being Survey in 2008.  If your son or daughter shows warning signs of these conditions, getting help early can improve their well being. It can also help to stop the problems happening again when they become adults.

Warning signs of depression and anxiety

Depression doesn’t just cause sadness or feeling blue, and anxiety doesn’t just make people worry. Young people can express depression and anxiety in many different ways. They might:

  • have trouble falling or staying asleep, or spend much of the day in bed
  • be tired, grumpy, irritable, tearful or upset most of the time
  • feel restless, keyed up or on edge
  • lose interest in things they used to enjoy, and have trouble starting and completing assignments or work
  • lose concentration and be forgetful and easily distracted
  • become withdrawn and lose friends
  • become worried and panicky about doing anything out of the ordinary
  • either refuse to eat or eat a lot
  • complain of feeling physically awful, with unexplained aches and pains, and not want to go to school

Teenagers and suicide prevention

We have seen an alarming increase in the number of teenagers coming for Hypnotherapy in 2012 who have had been displaying suicidal tendencies.  Depression left unchecked can be a precursor to suicidal thoughts. Whilst there are many reasons that can drive a teenager to this we generally do not venture into the “WHY”  in Hypnotherapy.  The teenage years are complicated due to the changing hormones in the body, changing social pressures and living in a busy world where parents are often working and not at home as much as they would like to be. We have included an article below that discusses a new type of addiction appearing in teenage girls related to mobile phone and text messaging.   We live in a complex time and the increasing use and reliance of electronic communication such as facebook and mobile phones has meant that many teenagers are not developing a robust sense of self.

The following article was published in the Herald Sun newspaper.

A STUDY into youth communication habits has identified serious physical and mental disorders as a result of teenagers texting excessively every day.

Anxiety, insecurity, depression and low self-esteem have all been identified by researchers as symptoms common among text-addicted teenagers.

Figures released by Boost Mobile show text messaging has increased by 89 per cent in two years, with one teenage customer managing to send an incredible 4000 text messages over nine days.

Jennie Carroll, a technology researcher from RMIT University in Melbourne studying the effects of modern communication, said the mobile had become meshed into teenagers’ lives.

“Texting is quite tribal – it is just what teenagers do with phones,” she said.

Dr Carroll said her study into the effects of modern communication had found four distinct disorders – textaphrenia, textiety, post-traumatic text disorder and binge texting.

Textaphrenia is thinking you’ve heard a message come in or felt the device vibrate when it actually hasn’t.

Textiety is the anxious feeling of not receiving any texts or not being able to send any.

“With textaphrenia and textiety there is the feeling that ‘no one loves me, no one’s contacted me’,” Dr Carroll said.

Post-traumatic text disorder is physical and mental injuries related to texting.

“There are physical issues arising like walking into things while texting,” Dr Carroll said.

“There were reports from Japan of ‘repetitive thumb syndrome’ and of young people’s thumbs growing in response to too much texting, leading to ‘monster thumbs’.”

Binge texting is when teens send multiple texts to feel good about themselves and try to attract responses.

Confessed SMS fanatic Nicole Arnold, 34, of Sydenham, said she sent 40 texts a day and texted even while eating and at the movies.

“I get told that I text too much. I have even been told off at work for it,” said Ms Arnold, who works in hospitality.

“I had to change my bill because I text so much. I now pay an extra $15 a month and get unlimited text messages. Because before my bill would be out of control. One month it was $800.”

RMIT’s Dr Carroll said teens who were aware they were texting too much or that it was affecting their lives could do something about it.

“Be involved in lots of things, have face-to-face contact as well as virtual contact,” she said.

If you are a parent and would like to find out more about how we work please call us to discuss. In most cases we require only one session (although we like to offer a follow up session at no charge). We have had some great success with teenagers.

Case study under the spotlight.

Jenny 16 years old becomes happy again and returns to school after 1 session of Hypnotherapy

Jenny’s father called me to ask about Hypnotherapy for her. He was skeptical but called because nothing else that he had tried had made a difference. Jenny had been a high achieving student at school. She had a close group of friends and liked school. But in recent months she had become with drawn to the point that she no longer wanted to go to school. Naturally her parents were concerned and arranged for her to see a Psychologist which made little difference and her father was concerned that this might be even aggravating the situation.  They then sort help from their GP and a Psychiatrist who was wanting to medicate Jenny for depression. Not wanting to do this her father called me in an attempt to remedy the situation. We had a few conversations by phone where he learned that Hypnotherapy is a non invasive therapy that works on the neural pathways of the brain that lead to habitual feelings and behaviours.  He struggled to believe that in just one session this could be set right and that Jenny would feel better about herself.  He agreed that he had nothing to lose and so he accompanied Jenny to her session, met Steve and waited for Jenny to finish the session.

2 days following her session we got a call from Jenny’s Dad who was astonished at her turn around. She started to get up in the morning earlier, was generally more communicative and said she felt happier and that her anxieties had disappeared. After a week Jenny said when wanted to go back to school. Her father wrote Steve a letter that expressed his deep gratitude, his relief and his thanks at having his beautiful daughter return to him again.

What to do if my teenager is depressed

HTH is fast, non invasive and effective.  In the vast majority of cases a teenager will come for one of two visits. (The second session is FREE).

  • We do not require a lot of talk (Hypnotherapy is NOT like many talking therapies that require the teenager to open up and discuss lots of details and WHY they are feeling like this
  • We recommend that a Parent (or carer) accompany the teenager to the session to meet the Hypnotherapist
  • We will ask the teenager “what’s not working for them” or “how do they feel?”
  • The Parent (carer) will be also asked if they would like to give their perspective
  • Only when the teenager is comfortable will we continue the session
  • Sessions are generally shorter in time than for adults (45 minutes to an hour)
  • Client confidentiality is observed as with all Hypnotherapy sessions

Please call us today to discuss or ask any questions you have. 03 95787565

Harry 15 years old gets rid of his anxiety and fear

Harry arrived for his session and we were told that he had Asperger disorder, is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.

He had for some time had a strong fear and anxiety of being alone that was difficult to deal with for his Mum Kerry and seemed to be getting worse.

In just one session Harry was able to get rid of the fear and anxiety and happily begin spending time in his own company as well as falling asleep at night on his own.

Monumental shift when I found a girl

I decided to do a Hypnotherapy session with Steve because I was feeling really bad. I was in a bad space, I was drinking too much and I was anxious and depressed all the time. I found myself at the cross roads in my life I had to do something quickly because I didn’t see any future.

Something used to stop me from talking to girls in bars and clubs so I used to drink to cope with the anxiety. I never really knew why until the last year but I had some sort of beliefs like “I don’t want to be alone” which was actually causing this problem when I went out.

After years of not being able to be in a relationship I was seeing a girl for 4 months which has been huge since I have not been in a relationship with a girl for so long and now we are really good friends. I also quit my job and now work for myself and I have stopped sharing my place with a flatmate and recently moved into a new apartment for the first time in 10 years.

I have stopped drinking excessively and essentially very little bothers me anymore. All my anxieties are gone and I am pretty neutral in relating to my life. In fact I have been able to accept myself and enjoy life being at peace just content and happy.

In relationships when I have a hiccup I now have a much better recovery time. I simply don’t get upset like a used to. In the past a used to take weeks maybe even months to recover from issues that happen in relationship.

In getting to the bottom of a very key belief I had “being unlovable and I don’t want to be alone” everything else started to change when I was able to get rid of these beliefs and feelings forever.

I have recommended Steve to lots of people! He has helped me completely turn around my life. I don’t think you will be able to find anyone else in Australia that is as good as him.

Rod is a 45 year old Education developer.

Seeing Steve has been the best thing I have ever done in my life.

I was on my own with two kids after a difficult separation. I had years of abuse from my ex he had emotionally pushed me to the ground and I had no shred of self-esteem left. My self-image was terrible, I thought my body was ugly and I had hated my boobs all my life.

It was after the session that I started to really recognise just how poor my self-esteem, my self-worth and poor my self-body image really was During the session I felt all the fear, anxiety, stress and depression that I had been holding for so long literally come out my toes and fingers. Steve suggested that following the session that day I would have the best sleep ever. And I did! Since my anxiety and depression has gone I have been able to stop taking the Zoloft with the consent of my GP. I just don’t feel like I need the medication anymore.

Marie Clarke 52 year with 2 children is a Sales Manager at a Plumbing Company came to HTH because of her separation.

Solving the relationships puzzle

Relationships can be complex, difficult and confronting.  They can also be sublime, loving, nurturing and a place where one can grow and develop. Many people get married or committed to a relationship early in life and have little idea about how to equip themselves with the strategies that are required for a successful relationship. Together with this the media plays havoc with what should be the perfect relationship; the fact of the matter is that when two people come together with their differing expectations, beliefs and ways of relating many things can and do go wrong.

We understand this complexity and all the issues that can and do go wrong. Many of the conflicts that occur in relationship can be dealt with at the sub conscious mind since most of our ways of relating have been modelled in our imprint years (0-7 years) when we have no capability to reject what is inappropriate of wrong.

Getting the relationship you want

Maybe you just attract the wrong person and you can see the pattern in your life. Maybe you just don’t know how to relate to others in a way that attracts the right people. Perhaps you have your foot in your mouth as soon as it opens and it just doesn’t get the result you intend. Perhaps you are almost phobic and even thinking about talking  to another stranger terrifies you.

We know how to help.

Just find me a friend

Few or no friends can feel lonely or isolating. It can often be a precursor to depression. There are limiting behaviours that stop or inhibit us from creating the friendships we desire. We all need friends someone to share life with our experiences, our dreams, and our problems.

We can put you on the right path. We don’t require long explanations, or digging up you past so call us today to make an appointment.

Depression Hypnotherapy

Do you suffer from any of these symptoms?

  • Total lack of motivation?
  • Emotional breakdowns: can’t stop crying?
  • Can’t leave the house?
  • Life feels like an enormous weight you carry around?
  • A feeling that life isn’t worth living?

You’re not the only one! Depression is one of the most common symptoms of modern life – especially MODERN life, and we say “symptom” because that’s what we consider it to be – a treatable, manageable (and expected) symptom of the day to day stresses of modern lifestyles that can be treated effectively through anti-depression hypnotherapy.

The stress of work, relationships, debt and professional commitments will send most of us into a depressed state at some point in our lives. This is not unusual.

In fact, research shows that 75% of people naturally come out of depression within a few days or weeks, but you may be part of the remaining 25% who can become unable to function day to day without medication.

Anti-Depressant Medication

Anthony Robbins famously said that in America depression is seen as a Prozac deficiency and not something that can be removed, no doubt thanks to the extensive marketing by the makers of anti-depressant drugs that tells us ‘everything will be ok’ if we take their drug.

On the contrary, relieving depression in the long term requires getting to the source of the problem. Treating the symptoms with pharmaceuticals will only encourage the feelings of depression and anxiety to return unless you take more and more of them. There is no clear remedy in sight…

Depression hypnotherapy acts at the root of the cause of your depression. Without reliving negative experiences, our professional hypnotherapists use effective relaxing and meditative hypnotherapy treatment to cure your depression faster than you could imagine.

Breaking Old Patterns

Is your depression forcing you to live the same pattern every day just to get by? This repetition continues to create the same result – more depression – but most of us have no idea where to start with breaking this cycle. Each day with depression is like quicksand, you don’t have the energy to fight but feel yourself sinking a little more every day, eventually you don’t even care.

You can break this cycle before it ruins your relationships or career, and we can teach you the skills to do this through the proven curative power of anti-depression hypnotherapy.

To help you overcome depression we start by teaching you to put the past, present and future into their true perspective through our meditative anti-depression hypnotherapy, so you can start enjoying the life you deserve.

Men don’t cry and they certainly don’t get depressed!

Peter is a 38 year old medical practitioner who came along for depression.

At the time when I went to see Steve I was magnifying things, everything was hard work and a chore. My sister picked this up and since she is a therapist she urged me to take some action – despite what was happening for me no one else in the family had any idea what was going on.

I came from a place where tough men don’ cry so I never addressed it. After all I believed that I couldn’t be depressed ‘I’m a man and men don’t get depressed!’

I was drinking and self-medicating as much as I could and because of that I was missing work and I was barely holding on.I didn’t want to go onto anti-depressant medication because of the stigma involved in that.  So I took the herbal suppliments to get by. But what I was doing was pushing everything to the side and I was on the line between going down and barely functioning.

I was even having suicidal thoughts which started to shock me.

Steve asked me how he could help? I told him that I was depressed and he said that he good at obliterating depression! I thought OK, WOW! As I come from a medical background that kind of response was a paradigm shift so I thought OK  let’s do it!  During the session I thought that nothing was happening since he was just talking to me. I liked him straight way – he spoke my language and I felt really confident with him.

My depression has definitely gone as well as the panic attacks.

It’s been the best $400 I have ever spent without a shadow of a doubt.

What our clients say

We value our clients privacy and confidentiality is something we treat seriously. Many of our clients come to us with very personal issues and challenges and prefer to keep themselves anonymous, however sometimes when our clients are freed from the constraints of a big issue that has been stopping them live their life fully, they really want to express their gratitude and share their stories… with you. With their permission, we have published some below:

I always thought of myself as a happy positive person.

Lindy D. is a 55 year old self employed professional

It was recommended that I have a session with Steve, to help clear any underlying emotions that were holding me back from progressing further in my business. I went along to the session with an open mind, although I was feeling a little anxious as it was a new experience for me.

During the session I felt relaxed as Steve explained how the session would run and he was very reassuring that I would remember all that we talked about.

At the end of the session I felt a sense of calmness as I headed off for home.

It was over the next few days that I began to notice the positive changes in both my thoughts and actions, in both personal and business situations

That negative inner dialogue and conflict was simply, not there.

I had always thought of myself as being a happy positive person, yet soon after my session, I was having a quiet coffee and chat with my daughter, when I became aware of a higher level of happiness inside me.

I have also noticed

an increase in my energy levels and have been waking up earlier and getting through a lot more work and activities throughout the day.

  • Increased Traits
  • Strong, confident and ready to make decisions.
  • Motivated- On fire!
  • Improved communication with G. Once I recognised his style of communication it has made it so much easier to communicate what I want.
  • Its OK to say no.
  • More productive
  • I have clarity and I can get through more stuff.  Before it would go around in circles.  Now since the emotional issues have disappeared I am free to go about and get more done in my busy day.

This has been very empowering for me.

When I speak to clients now I am enthusiastic and passionate which is infectious and this has brought me so much more business.  Before I was tired, overwhelmed and had a feeling of having hit the wall.

I can visualise now.  Previously I was unable to see my future now I not only am able to see where I am going very clearly but I am also dreaming of the future!!

In hindsight I think I had been running on empty from giving and giving and somehow I was just going through the motions.  Now I feel joyous, happy and energised it is like a light bulb has switched on.

I can’t believe the miraculous change in my kids!

Janine P lives in the South eastern suburbs and is a mother of 3 children aged  10, 12 and 15 years old

I have always been interested in hypno-therapy but it was was with some trepidation that I took brought my daughter then aged 10 and later my son aged 12 into see Steve and Cindy.

I worried about the impact of ‘messing’ with their young minds and deliberated long and hard about doing the right thing.

Well I have absolutely no doubts now that I did the right thing.

Steve described the mind to me as a computer, with software that sometimes needs reprogramming. After sessions with Steve my Husband and I simply could not believe the difference in our daughter. She went from being angry and destructive all of the time to being the opposite.  It was miraculous and two years on, she remains a happy confident child and an absolute joy to be with.

For my son the changes were more subtle,  I brought him in to see Steve for very different reasons;  he was lacking in confidence, finding it hard to communicate with people, particularly adults and I was worried about his low self esteem.

I have recommended HighTech Hypnotherapy to  several people and will continue to do so happily.

Many thanks.”

We have developed a course which provides a total of four sessions with us and your own personalized MP3 player to continue your journey in the comfort of your home.

“The last time I was this weight I was 23!”

Jim Costas 45 sheds 34 kilos!

Jim lost 25 kilos in the first 12 weeks!

Before After

Starting weight: 138kg September 2011
Current weight: 104kg June 7, 2012 shed 34 kilos

Goal weight: 98 kg

Jim 45 lives in Melbourne with his 3 kids and his wife. He has battled the bulge for most of his life. He turned to Steve for Hypnotherapy when everything else he had tried had failed. Hear his story.

His Goal: I needed to lose 30 kilos at least. Ideally I needed to lose 40kilos.

I had tried many other weight loss programs such as

  • Jenny Craig
  • Portion control diets
  • low carbohydrate diets

Most of them did work to a point and were a bit of a struggle. But when I got off them I put the weight back on.

His Result: I have currently lost 34 kilos and have 6 kilos to go! The last time I was this weight I was 23 year old and I am 45.
I found Steve to be a very interesting bloke and I felt very comfortable talking to him.

The session: Actually I left the session with Steve feeling it was a waste of money. I really felt like nothing was happening but as a few days passed I noticed that I was being careful around what I was eating and feeling more comfortable and determined that I had ever been. In fact it was pretty subtle but effective.
I walked in, did the session then walked out thinking that nothing’s happened! I asked myself did I do anything.

Following the session: Then after a few days I realised of all of a sudden I was on track where normally I wouldn’t have been! About 3 weeks after the session I started walking as well! Every day, rain hail or shine I will walk for 45 minutes a day – I had never done that before! What was even more surprising was that no one was forcing me to do it! I just do it. I have kept up the walking now for 8 months. From the session I had in September I lost 25 kilos in 3 months!
The best part is that I feel really good now I have dropped over 2- 3 clothes sizes in that time.

What Jim discovered: I am more careful with food choices. When I go out I can comfortably eat differently from others. Stay away from carbohydrates, fatty foods and takeaways. Strict through the week and then on the weekend I treat myself to what I want. But it is always within a boundary. Part of my mentality is that if I overdo it on the weekend when Monday morning arrives I will have to lose all that weight again so I keep an eye on the scales and if I see am creeping up again I am straight back on the program until the scales swing back in the right direction.

How we do it

In most cases you will only require ONE session (with a FREE follow up session). For some, they would like to go on our weight loss program.

Here’s what one of our clients has to say:

Faye Karp drops 3 dress sizes on the HighTech Hypnotherapy Weight Loss Program.

How has the program changed your relationship towards food and eating?
Well if you are a smoker or a drinker you can abstain from drinking and smoking, but with food you still have to eat! I started to see myself as a “garbage-a-holic” I would eat what I call garbage food in between healthy meals Now I have given up that way of eating. Now I feel that I have more control around food. If I need to snack, I reach for healthy food like fruit or nuts. I was recently given a box of chocolates and I gave them to someone else (rather than eating them myself) as I just don’t feel like eating this type of treat anymore. How has your approach towards exercise changed since your sessions?
I walk 6 days a week at 6am. It has just become something that is automatic for me now… and the best thing about this is that this was completely my decision as with all the changes I have made about eating and exercise since the program.

Your weight loss journey doesn’t need to be so challenging if you are able to stop fighting those unconscious urges to repeat damaging behaviour. You have the knowledge and strength to start a weight loss journey today – we can give you the rest of the tools to guarantee your success.

Smokers Use Our Quit Smoking Hypnotherapy To Finally Kick The Habit

Have you tried to quit with patches or gum and you’re still smoking?

Can’t stand the sight of the new packaging; the horrific pictures now appearing on cigarette packs?

Quit SmokingHad enough? Then read on…
People tell us it is hard when they are out for a drink with friends, studying for exams, after a meal, while driving, while talking on the phone or even while watching television. If this sounds like you, our quit smoking hypnotherapy can finally free you of the urge to smoke in any specific situation.

Think of smoking hypnotherapy as a session of concentrated relaxation, much stronger than meditation but based on the same principles. Your subconscious mind holds the key to your addictions and habits, and any barriers to breaking these can be overcome with hypnosis.

Habit versus Addiction

Talking on the phone, going out with friends … these are activities that you continue to do after quitting smoking, so the physical urge to smoke remains strong even if your body is getting substitute nicotine from a patch or gum.

One client told us of her strong desire to smoke every time she made a phone call, meaning she had to stay off the phone if she wanted to avoid the urge to smoke a cigarette because of the strong psychological connection between those activities. Her body didn’t crave nicotine at any other time, so this wasn’t an addiction to nicotine but a psychological habit formed over years of repeated behaviour.

Smoking hypnotherapy focuses on this habit, which is different to the physical addiction to nicotine which most people find easier to break.

“I even forgot that I used to smoke”

Rob is a 42 yo builder who quit after several other unsuccessful attempts

I started to get worried about the long term effects of smoking. I began smoking in my early 20’s as a thing that I did with mates but over the years more of my mates gave up and I started to feel like the odd man out a social gatherings.

I had tried a number of other ways to quit; patches, gum, medication and will power but they never worked or worked for a short time only. I found the session with Steve was easy and straight forward. It was fast and after the session I didn’t feel like a cigarette. In fact it was 3 weeks after the session I was standing at a BBQ and someone lit up and I remembered that I used to smoke but I had forgotten about it completely. 2 years down the track and I haven’t had one. The best thing was that I never picked up a replacement addiction after the session since Steve dealt with that too!

Heavy Smokers

You could be thinking that you have been smoking for so long that you’ll never be able to quit, but we have succeeded with many heavy smokers – some smoking 2-3 packs per day with most smoking for over 20 years.

Our quit smoking hypnotherapy methods are scientifically proven and have a phenomenal track record of results.

Conquer Anxiety & Phobias Today

I had a Public Speaking and social phobia that caused me constant nervousness over having to “perform” in social contexts. I dreaded the idea of it and felt awkward and resistant to any hint of a Public Speaking opportunity or social activity. I coped with drink binging, drugs and eating bad food. It had been a cycle for many years despite having tried psychologists.

After the session I had a week of road shows organised for work. I got to the end of the week and I was thinking what ever was my problem? Because all the issues had so completely disappeared it was very hard to know what the original problem was since it had completely disappeared.

Peter Hewson is 40 years old and is an Executive Sales Manager for a Multinational IT company.

We can help you obliterate your fears: FACT!

Phobias are irrational, intense and persistent. If you have a phobia that’s causing you distress, whether it’s one of the many hundreds of common phobias or one that is unique to you, your activities, things or people. If you suffer from phobias you will know that the main symptom is an obsessive desire to avoid the feared subject or situation, but if avoidance isn’t possible the next stage of symptoms can become extremely distressing.

You may experience any of the hundreds of common phobias, or a rare personal phobia that is unique to you and your life experiences, but it is likely that your fear will fit into one of these 3 categories:

  • Social
  • Spatial
  • Specific

Social phobias

Do you fear embarrassment or what people might think of you? Not good enough? Not smart enough? Not educated enough? These are the basis of most social fears including:

  • Fear of public speaking
  • Fear of eating in public
  • Fear of self expression
  • Fear of leaving the house (Agoraphobia)
  • Fear of crowds or large groups
  • Fear of general social situations

You may feel that these phobias are common or normal or even physical, especially if your reaction includes anxiety symptoms like increased heart rate, breathing difficulties or panic attacks, but the mind is a powerful thing which creates these feelings based on our thoughts, the way we talk to ourselves, the things we picture or see to ourselves.

If you experience Claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or agoraphobia (fear of leaving your home) or perhaps a fear of flying or heights these are always in the top phobias in any survey or study.

You are not alone if you suffer from any of these phobias, whether you are just slightly afraid or spiral into a complete meltdown. Phobias come in a variety of levels of severity so if your phobia is starting to affect your lifestyle, it is time to seek help and overcome these fears once and for all.

Spiders, birds, cats or dogs … It’s all the same to us. We know how the phobias work, we know how to take them apart, neutralize or destroy them. And best of all, only one session!

Let us share the best in mind science techniques with you.

Children and Hypnosis

I can’t believe the miraculous change in my kids!

Janine Peterson is 38 years old  and has 3 children aged  10, 12 and 15 years old

Many thanks.

Hypnotherapy for children is proven to be very helpful, non invasive and fun. Children respond well to hypnosis and we have years of experience with children from the age of 7 years and up, helping them cope with all sorts of issues. (You can find the more common issues and case studies below). When it comes to children, it’s vital that the Hypnotherapist has the ability to relate with the child, establish a rapport with them in order to help them with their issue. Steve has 4 children of his own, the eldest just turned 30 in 2012 and the youngest is only 4!  That’s why he has lots of experience in dealing with children of all ages.

The power of rapport

During our sessions with kids we always speak to a child at their level. We never use language that is out of their grasp nor do we speak down to the child. It is important that they are able to trust us; even the most shy child is able to find their tongue and speak about what happens in their reality, why the issue is stopping them and what they would prefer to be happening.

Imagination and hypnosis

The doorway between the conscious and the unconscious mind is the imagination. For children, it’s relatively easy to reach at the deepest levels, in a much quicker time than required by a good many adults. Stories, adventures, visualization, imaginative games, role-playing, magic, puppets, and costumes work most effectively with children. Any tools that stimulate the imagination are at the Hypnotherapist’s disposal.

What might be included in the session?

  • Playing a game
  • Using the child’s imagination
  • Use of their favourite hobby, subject, thing to do
  • TV program
  • Story telling
  • Going on a magical trip in a rocket ship to mars
  • Taking a trip to a magical forest

What will be included in a session?

  • Spending the first part of the session with both you the parent and your child (until your child is comfortable and feeling safe )
  • Allowing your child to get used to the environment whilst Steve talks to them
  • Any questions you may have will be addressed in the beginning of the session
  • Allowing your child to explain why they are at the session

Some of the more common issues for children that we have successfully dealt with are;

  •  Bed wetting
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep issues
  • Learning and study
  • Weight management
  • Anger
  • Thumb sucking
  • Creating positive relationships to school, sport, teachers, siblings, competition etc
  •  Self esteem and self confidence
  • Issues that may be related to parental divorce and separation

Sally, 7 & Thomas, 8 have such an extraordinary result that Mum and Dad had to try Hypnotherapy too

Sally presented at her session with a number of issues. She often became mute – known as selective mutism (didn’t speak), she had a phobia of flying which meant that one parent had to take the bus or train with her when she travelled  interstate and she suffered migraines.  After only 2 sessions Sally (her parents paid only for one session)  had overcome all 3 issues! Her speaking returned, the migraines miraculously disappeared and she was no longer afraid to travel by air.  Her parents were so amazed they decided to bring her brother for an appointment:

Thomas is 8 years old and was consistently not eating his breakfast or lunch. He would take a long time to dress for school despite his parents repetitive requests and pleas. Mum and Dad had come to the end of their tether after attempting disciplining, threatening that he would lose certain privileges and even promising gifts/treats if he would do as he was told.  He was also complaining of being bored at school and would spend time reading books instead.

Within just days of his session Thomas became a changed child he got up on time he no longer was late for school because he didn’t get dressed when needed and he began enjoying school. His focus changed over night and he started looking forward to getting to school and enjoying the lessons.

With 5 children the parents were so over joyed that they had restored harmony in the household that they came for sessions themselves and also received similar benefits to that of their children.  Mum declared that she no longer had any reason to take efexor that she had been prescribed for depression.

(NB: We cannot recommend that our patients go off any medication they may have been prescribed by their GP. However in many instances clients no longer have reason to take medication and so with their GP’s consent are able to get off the medication.)

Other common issues we work with Children on

Sometimes we find that it is useful to set the child homework. This is part of creating a new behaviour and with repetition the new behavior becomes the norm.

What Parents Need to Know to Make Hypnotherapy Work?

The only effective way we can work with children is for the parent to remain outside the room during the session. This is for 2 reasons. The first is that the quality of information is always better without the parent in the room (no matter how great a parent you are) and secondly the child won’t be tempted to refer to the parent for answers or use the parent to hide behind.

It is also very important that the parent doesn’t ‘re install’ the old behaviour by reminding the child of their old issue by being overly caring or thinking that mentioning the old issue might somehow help. It is more useful to keep talking about the new behaviour. For example a parent might say “Now remember you don’t wet your bed anymore” This creates the mental image of bed wetting (the unconscious mind cannot delete a negative such as “no”, “not” “don’t” etc), what might be useful is creating an image such as:  “how excited do you think you will be when you wake up in a dry bed tomorrow morning?” This creates 2 positive images, the dry bed and the excitement or discovering the dry bed. Remember: Mum’s voice is probably the most hypnotic voice on the planet for a child.

It is advisable that you stay in contact with your hypnotherapist after the session to find out how best to language your communication around the issue.

How many hypnotherapy sessions are required?

Typically up to 2 sessions are needed. The first to create the new direction and eliminate the old negative emotions and or behaviours and the second to check in to see how it is all going and to make sure the new changes continue.

Working  with Children Check (WWC)

We have a current WWC expiry 08.03.2017.  The card can be shown if required at the commencement of your child’s session.

Peter age 11 overcomes paralyzing anxiety and stage fright.

Peter is a talented singer and musician. However it was impossible for him to go on stage to perform. His anxiety about his performance meant that he was physically ill due to anxiety before going on stage.

His Mum, Anna didn’t know how to help, but was desperate to try anything as Peter had a very big performance coming up that he couldn’t afford to miss due to his stage fright and nerves.   In the past she had tried talking to him but that didn’t help. She didn’t know who to turn to but stumbled upon Hypnotherapy online and decided to give it a go.

Within a day after the session Peter arrived backstage to a full house of over 1,000 people where he would perform in front of the orchestra as the lead singer.

He went on stage excited and gave the performance of his life. The performance was an enormous success. Peter was ecstatic and his mother was relieved. He was not ill and in fact he was excited leaving behind the old unwanted emotions and behaviours that had plagued him for a long time.

Case Study

Tom displays obsessive compulsive (OCD) like behaviour that is eliminated in 1 brief session

Tom is a bright, likeable  10 year old boy who came to us for an unusual behaviour he had developed in reaction to having his hands and feet wet. Every time he got his hand and feet wet he had to apply lanolin cream because he couldn’t tolerate the feelings. This made bathing, and swimming very difficult because he had to obviously apply cream after each time. His Mum was very worried since his behaviour, particularly at school was beginning to attract unwanted attention. With puberty on the way Tom needed to eliminate this beahviour before it started to escalate and get even more out of control.  After a single brief session his Mum nervously asked how it went and when she could see for her own eyes if the Hypnotherapy had worked. Tom told his Mum that he had already been to the bathroom and washed his hands with no desire what so ever to apply cream. The old feelings that used to drive the behaviour had also miraculously gone too!
